Post subject: | Old truss rod |
Hello, I have this older truss rod pictured below. It is a bit wider than the 1/4" one that I have from LMI. It's closer to 7/16. In the pic you can see a black thin cardboard strip that is taped in place with masking tape. I presume this was so it wouldn't be lost by the guy that had this before me. ![]() For anyone that has used this type or knows the answer, some questions: 1) Should I take the tape off the black strip before installation? 2) Should I take the tape off that is covering the channel? 3) Should I take the wrapped tape off the rod? Brad: That looks like the aluminum channel Martin style for sale by Stew-Mac. The black may be fiber that was to be installed in a too wide channel..??? It can come off. The tape covering the channel stays on and I am unsure about anything on the rod because I've never opened the channel of this type of rod. They are an excellent rod but are one way and one has to be aware of that fact. I use them and epoxy them into the channel in the neck which adds to neck stiffness. All that has been said above is in relation to the Stew-Mac rods. Tom |

Your pictures are not very clear -- but the Martin protocol is to have the slot slightly deeper than the aluminum rod itself. The tape on the open side of the rod is to prevent glue from getting on the mechanism (threads) do not remove. The black strip is a filler that goes between the top of the rod and the fingerboard. Assembled as seen here: http://www.kennethmichaelguitars.com/ne ... embly.html |

Thanks, Tom and Ken. I'll give it a shot with these. I had it so I figured I would use it instead of buying another two way. |
